Here's To Hoping

Once upon a time, long, long ago, I was blessed to watch the film Army of Darkness, thanks to some good friends. For those who are unfamiliar with the film, I am truly sorry. It is the EPIC tale of Ash, played by Bruce Campbell, a man transported back in time in a freak accident while trying to kill an ancient dead force from beyond (you know you are totally curious after hearing that). Armed with a shotgun and a chainsaw for an arm-yeah, that's right, a chainsaw for an arm-Ash must overcome an army of deadites (skeleton army) and their leader in order to retrieve the Necronomicon (ie; Book of the Dead) and be able to return home to his own time.
But this is actually the third movie in the Evil Dead series. First came Evil Dead and next Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn, both horror/comedy classics. Though Evil Dead is a pretty legit and serious horror movie, Evil Dead II pokes fun at Evil Dead, doesn't take itself seriously and even incorporates some slapstick humor throughout it all, though still gruesome at times with absurd amounts of blood, most of which is green or black and almost never realistic in the least even if it is red. You see, Sam Rami-the man ultimately responsible for these films that border perfection-has a very unique style of filming. For those still unaware, it was he that directed the Spider Man trilogy. I personally think he came into his own with that series in the second film. If you watch the ferocity of the filming and horrific scenes (especially when the doctors are about to cut off Doctor Octopus' mechanical arms, but instead get mutilated), you will still only glimpse what Mr. Rami is capable of.

Rami's newest venture, DRAG ME TO HELL, takes us back to his horror roots. I have high hopes that he won't disappoint. With any luck there will be some tongue-in-cheek one-liners, as well as ridiculous amounts of over-the-top-laughable horror gore (in Evil Dead II, there is a scene where blood explodes through a wall with the force of 1,000 fire hydrants-it is absolutely absurd and awesome).
